Isla Guadalupe is known for its seasonal white shark population, attracting some of the top commercial shark diving companies in the world to this remote and pristine dive site. Along with the sharks a small research team lead by Dr. Mauricio Hoyos from CICIMAR tracks these animals.
"Acoustic telemetry had been used in Guadalupe Island to successfully track white sharks. In previous years we used an ultrasonic receiver with a directional hydrophone to detect sharks tagged with acoustic transmitters with depth and temperature sensors. This technology was designed for manual tracking of aquatic animals from small boats. So far, we have tracked multiple white sharks and have learned much about their behavioral patterns while swimming in the waters surrounding the island (see results)."In 2010 Dr.Hoyos filmed this incredible scene. The animal did not survive this encounter:
shark diving, shark conservation and things we find "amusing."
